Personal
Construct Theory is an alternative approach
to
psychology (and to other fields in the humanities),
developed by
George A. Kelly. It emphasises the meanings
that individuals attach to events, things, other people, etc., rather
than
analysing supposedly undisputable facts. The
philosophical underpinning of this approach has been termed Constructive
Alternativism, recognising
that (almost) always more than one view is possible – a stance that
goes well
with the diversity and multiplicity of artistic expression.
Originally
developed within clinical psychology and psychotherapy, and expanded to
social
psychology (including the understanding of organisations), education,
and a
variety of other areas, Personal Construct Theory has only recently
begun to
focus on the arts. This has shown in the organisation of an
international
symposium and the collaborative publication of a book on Creative
Construing.
And it now appears that many
people involved in Personal Construct Psychology –
as
scholars, researchers, practitioners, educators – are scholars or
practitioners
in the fields of arts, too.
This web
site therefore pursues a dual purpose: offering a forum for Personal
Construct Psychology and the Arts,
and presenting Creative Construing by
people involved in PCP.
